Parks' Sacrifice Fly Completes Comeback, Sweep Over Duquesne
Struthers, Ohio -- Brent Parks hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to complete a four-run rally in game two while Lucas Engle threw six shutout innings in game one as Youngstown State swept a doubleheader from Duquesne 7-0 and 4-3 on Tuesday at Cene Park.
With the win the Penguins improve to 9-12 on the year and won for the eighth time in 10 games.
Parks' heroics came after the Penguins trailed 3-0 after the Dukes plated three runs in the top of the second. But YSU got one run back in the bottom half of the second, tied the score with two runs in the fifth and got five innings of strong relief from Kevin Libeg.
After being held to just three hits and game one and being retired in order in the first inning of game two, Duquesne banged out three hits that led to three runs in the second inning.
J.D. Hannan drew a bases-loaded walk with two down in the second to cut the deficit to two, and Jim Phillips hit a two-out, two-run double to right to bring home Nutt and Banks in the fifth to tie the score at 3-3.
Then in the seventh, Phillips singled to left to start the inning and Brian Dill reached on a fielder's choice as Phillips was retired going to second. Erich Diedrich then reached on a throwing error on a tough play up the middle and Josh Page walked to load the bases. Parks worked the count to 2-1 before hitting a looping fly ball to left center to bring home Dill for the win.
In game one, Engle allowed only three hits and one walk while striking out a career-high six hitters while Josh Wells pitched a scoreless seventh to pace the Penguins to a 7-0 victory.
Diedrich put the 'Guins up early when he knocked the first pitch from Bob Reifschneider over the right field wall with two runners on in the first. After Tommy Nutt singled and advanced on a Brandon Caipen sacrifice, Charles Schultz drew a one-out walk to put two runners on. Justin Banks' grounder moved the runners over to set up Diedrich's first career homer.
YSU scored three more in the fifth on an RBI groundout from Schultz and RBI singles from Banks and Jason Coffey. Jim Phillips was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth for the final tally.
Engle, who has allowed only one run in his past 17 1/3 innings, picked up his second win in as many starts. Wells' appearance was his first since March 7, 2004, after having Tommy John's surgery last May.
YSU's shutout in game one was the fourth this season, which is a mark that has not been reached since 1996.
The Penguins will begin a three-game series with IPFW with a Saturday doubleheader at Eastwood Field. First pitch on Saturday is set for 1 p.m. while Sunday's finale will begin at noon.
