Thomas, Schultz Lead Penguins to Sweep of Morehead State
Morehead, Ky. -- Justin Thomas threw
six shutout innings in game one
while Charles Schultz went 3-for-4
with three RBIs in game two to lead
Youngstown State to a doubleheader
sweep of Morehead State on Thursday.
Thomas allowed only three hits and and struck out six and
Andy Svitak struck out the side in
the seventh as the pair earned their
first career combined shutout in
YSU's 4-0 victory in game one. The
Penguins then turned a one-run
deficit into a 9-2 lead by scoring
eight unanswered runs en route to a
10-5 victory in the nightcap.
In game one, neither team scored until the fifth when Tommy
Nutt doubled home Brian Boone and
Erich Diedrich. Dustin Thomas, Jim
Phillips and Schultz then then
banged out three straight hits to
start the sixth to put the Guins up
3-0. Nutt added an insurance run in
the seventh when he walked, was
sacrificed to second, advanced to
third on a wild pitch and scored on
a Justin Banks groundout.
Only two Gamecocks reached second base the entire contest
while Brent Parks and Phillips had
two hits apiece.
In game two, Nutt got the Penguins on the board when he
scored on a wild pitch with two outs
in the first, but Morehead State
plated a run in each of the first
two innings to take a 2-1 lead.
YSU then scored eight unanswered runs with one in the third,
two in the fifth and five in the
sixth.
Parks singled to start the third and scored after stealing
second and advancing on two wild
pitches. The Penguins then scored
two runs in the fourth on three
straight hits with two outs. Schultz
singled and stole second to set up
Boone's RBI single, and Brian Dill
followed with an RBI double. In the
sixth, Schultz hit a two-run homer,
Dill and J.D. Hannan hit
back-to-back RBI doubles, and Nutt
added a sacrifice fly.
Morehead State plated three runs in the sixth to get within
four, but Schultz singled home Banks
with two outs in the seventh for the
final tally.
Kevin Libeg picked up his first win of the season in game
two, allowing three runs on four
hits in four innings of relief.
Boone gave up two runs in two
innings in the starting role, and
Ryan Sellman allowed one hit and
struck out three in one inning.
The Penguins will look to continue their winning streak when
they take on West Liberty State on
Tuesday at 4 p.m. YSU will then play
its home opener on Wednesday against
Bethany at 3 p.m. at Cene Park in
Struthers.
