Quick Start Leads Penguins to 9-4 Over Morehead
State in Finale
Morehead, Ky. -- Youngstown State scored eight runs in
the first four innings and got a
solid effort from the bullpen to
defeat Morehead State 9-4 on
Thursday afternoon at Allen Field.
Erich Diedrich and Charles Schultz both homered for the
Penguins, who improved to 3-9 on the
season and have collected at least
10 hits in five of the last six
games. Schultz, J.D. Hannan and Josh
Page each had two hits while
Diedrich's home run extended his
hitting streak to 10 games.
YSU starter Eric Shaffer earned his second win of the season
after allowing four runs in six
innings, and Kevin Libeg and Ryan
Sellman combined to throw three
scorless innings of relief. Libeg
did not allow a hit and struck out
five in his two innings.
Clay Muntz took his first career loss after allowing eight
runs in 3 1/3 innings.
After Schultz's solo blast in the first, the Penguins scored
five runs in the second inning
thanks to Diedrich's two-run homer
and a two-run double from J.D.
Hannan.
Morehead State cut the margin to four by scoring a run in the
second and third innings, but the
Penguins upped the lead back to six
with two bases-loaded walks in the
fourth.
The Eagles scored twice in the sixth before an RBI double
from Page in the ninth ended the
scoring.
YSU hit .384 as a team and scored 29 runs in the three-game
series against the Eagles.
The Penguins will begin a three-game series at Xavier on
Friday.
