Struthers, Ohio -- Twelve different players combined to post 21 hits for Youngstown State in an 18-1 victory over West Liberty in the Penguins' home opener on a cold Thursday afternoon at Cene Park.
Erich Diedrich and Brandon Caipen were each a home run away from hitting for the cycle to lead the Penguins, who improved to 6-10 on the year. Dustin Thomas added three hits and three RBIs while Mike Turjanica, Lou Gattozzi and Josh Page each recorded two hits.
YSU starter Chuck Schiffhauer earned his first career victory, holding the Hilltoppers hitless and scoreless in two innings. Joe Antinone added two scoreless innings, and Matt Gnacinski, Andy Svitak, Kevin Libeg and Ryan Sellman all threw one scoreless inning. West Liberty scored an unearned run off of Josh Wells in the sixth for its only run.
The bats were hot early for the Penguins as they scored 15 runs in the first five innings. Diedrich and Caipen each hit two-run triples in the first as part of a five-run inning, and YSU went up 8-0 after scoring three runs in the third.
After tallying an unearned run on a sacrifice fly from Caipen in the fourth, the Penguins banged out seven hits to score six runs in the fifth to go up 15-0 thanks to RBI hits from Brent Parks, Diedrich, Caipen and Thomas.
Turjanica hit a two-run triple and scored on a passed ball in the eighth to end the scoring.
YSU's 21 hits were the third most in school history, and its four triples tied for the second-most in school history.
The Penguins will open up Horizon League play with a three-game series at Butler beginning Saturday at noon.
