Penguins Post 21 Hits in Home Opener Win Over West Liberty
Struthers, Ohio -- Twelve different
players combined to post 21 hits for
Youngstown State in an 18-1 victory
over West Liberty in the Penguins'
home opener on a cold Thursday
afternoon at Cene Park.
Erich Diedrich and Brandon Caipen were each a home run away
from hitting for the cycle to lead
the Penguins, who improved to 6-10
on the year. Dustin Thomas added
three hits and three RBIs while Mike
Turjanica, Lou Gattozzi and Josh
Page each recorded two hits.
YSU starter Chuck Schiffhauer earned his first career
victory, holding the Hilltoppers
hitless and scoreless in two
innings. Joe Antinone added two
scoreless innings, and Matt
Gnacinski, Andy Svitak, Kevin Libeg
and Ryan Sellman all threw one
scoreless inning. West Liberty
scored an unearned run off of Josh
Wells in the sixth for its only run.
The bats were hot early for the Penguins as they scored 15
runs in the first five innings.
Diedrich and Caipen each hit two-run
triples in the first as part of a
five-run inning, and YSU went up 8-0
after scoring three runs in the
third.
After tallying an unearned run on a sacrifice fly from Caipen
in the fourth, the Penguins banged
out seven hits to score six runs in
the fifth to go up 15-0 thanks to
RBI hits from Brent Parks, Diedrich,
Caipen and Thomas.
Turjanica hit a two-run triple and scored on a passed ball in
the eighth to end the scoring.
YSU's 21 hits were the third most in school history, and its
four triples tied for the
second-most in school history.
The Penguins will open up Horizon League play with a
three-game series at Butler
beginning Saturday at noon.
