Penguins Break
from League Grind to Play Kent State
on Wednesday
Youngstown --
The Youngstown State baseball team
will take a break from Horizon
League action for a game against
Kent State on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at
KSU's Schoonover Stadium.
Senior Adam Kalafos will start on the mound against the
Golden Flashes, who sit atop the MAC
East Division and have an overall
record of 24-17. Kalafos has earned
the win in his past two starts and
earned victories in three straight
appearances earlier this month.
The Penguins enter the midweek contest in the middle of a
grind in the Horizon League season.
YSU won the finale of a three-game
series against Cleveland State on
Saturday to remain in third place in
the league standings. After the game
against Kent State, YSU plays five
straight against league leader
Wright State, including a three-game
set beginning Friday at 7 p.m.
Wednesday's game will be the last in an April that saw the
Penguins improve drastically at the
plate. As a team, YSU has batted
.323 in the first 22 games this
month to up its average to .287. The
.323 mark is a staggering 79 points
higher than YSU posted during the
first 20 games of the season.
YSU lost the only meeting between the two schools located
just more than 40 miles apart from
each other. The Penguins and Golden
Flashes split two games in 2006 with
each squad winning at home.
The Golden Flashes have won 14 of their last 16 and had been
victorious in 12 straight before
losing at Duquesne on April 23.
Chris Tremblay is batting a
team-high .360 and is one of five
starters hitting at least .325. Greg
Rohan is the reigning MAC East
Player of the Week after hitting
five of his team-leading 13 home
runs in six games last week.
