Highlights Outstanding Pitching
Effort in 2-1 Victory Over
Cincinnati
Cincinnati
-- Senior Chuck Schiffhauer
allowed one run in six innings and
reliever Joe Antinone retired the
final seven batters in order to pace
Youngstown State to a 2-1 victory
over Cincinnati on Tuesday afternoon
at Marge Schott Stadium.
The win was YSU's first of the season and the first under
head coach Rich Pasquale. The
Penguins also defeated Cincinnati
for the first time since May 8,
1991.
Schiffhauer allowed only two hits and matched his career high
in strike outs with seven to earn
the victory. He walked five but
never more than one in an inning,
and he kept the leadoff hitter off
the base paths in his final five
innings.
"I can't say enough about how Schiff pitched today," Pasquale
said. "Joe did a great job of
keeping their guys off balance. We
also played great defense behind
those guys. It was just an
all-around good game, and it's
something that we can definitely
build on."
Tom Clayton homered and Cory Hornyak had an RBI double in the
second inning for the Penguins, who
outhit the Bearcats 10-3.
Cincinnati, which entered the game with 23 stolen bases in
eight games, used its speed to get on the board in the first. Tony Campana drew
a leadoff walk and stole second and third to set up Josh Harrison's RBI single
to right.
The Bearcats lead was short-lived as Clayton took the first
pitch of the second inning off of UC starter Tyler Smith over the right field fence for his first
home run of the year. Eric Marzec
then scored on Hornyak's two-out double to right center,
which was YSU's fourth hit of the inning.
Schiffhauer was able to hold the lead and did not allow
another hit until the sixth.
Cincinnati had chances to tie it in the third and seventh
innings, but those opportunities
came with two outs. In the seventh
the Bearcats got a leadoff double
from Cameron Satterwhite, but
reliever Ryan Wackerman got Michael
Obyc to foul out and Campana to
ground out. Wackerman handed the
ball off to Antinone after a walk,
and the senior righty retired all
seven batters he faced to earn his
first career save.
Smith was charged with both runs, allowed eight hits and
struck out eight in six innings.
The Penguins will continue their six-game week tomorrow
against Xavier at noon. |
