Dearth's Arm
Leads Penguins to Game Two Victory
at Marshall
Huntington, W.Va. --
Sophomore lefthander Cody Dearth
allowed five base runners and one
run in six innings to lead the
Youngstown State baseball team to a
2-1 victory in game two of
doubleheader split at Marshall on
Sunday at the Kennedy Center.
Dearth allowed just a run in the
third, and YSU got single tallies in
the sixth and seventh to prevail.
Dearth allowed four hits, walked one
and struck out four to pick up his
first collegiate victory.
Marshall scored 11 runs in the
first three innings in game one of
the doubleheader en route to a 15-2
victory.
After the Thundering Herd broke
a scoreless tie in the third, YSU
finally got on the board in the
sixth with a run on one hit and
three walks. With two runners
already on from walks, Eric Marzec
reached on an infield single, and
Anthony Porter walked with the bases
loaded.
John Koehnlein then came up with
the game-winning hit in the seventh
inning with a two-out single to left
center. His clutch hit followed a
strike out and a pick-off at second
base once the Penguins put two
runners on with no outs.
Phil Klein came in to get a
strike out and a game-ending 6-3
double play to earn his first
collegiate save.
In the opener, Marshall pounded
11 of its 14 hits in the first three
innings and scored four runs in the
first, four in the second and three
in the third.
An RBI ground out by Jeremy
Banks in the fourth and an RBI
double by Marzec in the fifth
accounted for YSU's runs. Marshall
added four more runs on a grand slam
in the fifth.
The Penguins will play their
home opener on Tuesday against
Pittsburgh. First pitch at Eastwood
Field is set for 3 p.m. |
