Penguins Drop
Two One-Run Games in Doubleheader at
Towson
Towson, Md.
-- The Youngstown State baseball
team came up a run short with a
ninth-inning rally in game one and
saw Towson rally from four runs down
in game two as the Penguins were
swept in a doubleheader Saturday at
Schuerholz park.
In game one, the Penguins nearly came back from a 6-1 deficit
by scoring a run in the eighth and
three in the ninth in a 6-5 loss. YSU led 7-3 in
game two before Towson scored three
in the sixth and two in the seventh
to win 8-7.
The Penguins outhit the Tigers 9-5 in game one, but YSU
allowed six walks and hit into a
game-ending double play with runners
at the corners. Three of those walks
came in to score for the Tigers.
In game two, YSU led 6-2 and 7-3 behind four home runs before
the Tigers rallied. Towson scored
three runs in the sixth and scored
two runs in the seventh on a leadoff
homer and a two-out, bases loaded
single in the seven-inning affair.
There were eight home runs in the two games with a wind
blowing out toward right field. Eric
Marzec had two for YSU, and David
Leon, Jacke Healey, Anthony Porter
had one apiece.
Marzec and C.J. Morris combined for all five of the hits by
YSU's starters in game one, and John
Koehnlein, Tom Clayton and Derek
Carr were a combined 4-for-4 off the
bench. Healey and Porter had two
hits and two RBIs in game two. The
Penguins drew 10 walks in seven
innings in game two, but they
stranded 11 runners. Six of those
walks came to start the fourth
inning when YSU scored three runs
without recording a hit.
Phil Klein was tagged with the loss in game one, allowing
five runs on three hits and five
walks in 5.1 innings. Cory Hornyak
threw a scoreless inning in his
first outing of the year, and Ryan
Messmer threw a scoreless eighth.
The Penguins will try to avoid the series sweep on Sunday at
1 p.m. |
