Athletics Department Earns NCAA Division I Certification
Youngstown State University’s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has earned full certification from the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
The NCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification announced Thursday that YSU is one of 41 Division I institutions earning full certification during the NCAA’s second cycle of athletics certification
“The purpose of this program is to help ensure integrity in our athletics operations,” YSU President David C. Sweet said. “We are proud that this review shows that YSU’s intercollegiate athletics meets the highest standards as outlined by the NCAA.”

The certification process is a self-study by an institution’s president or chancellor and includes a review of governance and commitment to rules, academic integrity, and equity and student-athlete well-being. The certified designation means that YSU athletics operates in substantial conformity with the operating principles adopted by the NCAA Division I membership.
“I want to thank Vice President for Student Affairs Cynthia Anderson, Associate Athletics Director Elaine Jacobs and the entire peer-review committee for their diligent work during the certification process,” YSU Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Ron Strollo said.
Subcommittee chairs of the peer-review committee included Dr. Jane Kestner, Dr. Tom Maraffa and Dr. Ron Chordas.
YSU has been working on the certification since September 2005. Three subcommittees evaluated the current policies and data requested by the NCAA related to academics, governance and rules compliance, as well as student-athlete welfare issues. The self-study report was submitted in May 2006 to the NCAA, and a peer review team visited the university last fall.
All Division I universities and colleges are required to undergo NCAA certification every 10 years. YSU successfully completed its first certification self-study in 1998.
