Meeting Notes
Present: Beverly,

Minutes from the Nov. 21
meeting were reviewed and approved by consensus.
The committee continued its
consideration of action items related to Principle 2.2, Action Item #5.
With regards to Action Item #5:
TUTORING
- No tutoring takes place in
the athletic department except on rare occasions when appropriate tutoring
cannot be otherwise arranged.
- Student-athletes are
directed by their athletic advisor to the Center for Student Progress, Math
Assistance Center, Writing Center, Reading & Study Skills Center or
departmental tutoring for any tutoring needs.
- These services are
available without charge to any student at the University.
- Student-athletes are made
aware of these services via the student-athlete handbook, their athletic
advisor and the YSU web site.
- These services are
evaluated by their governing units which reside outside of athletics and by
the students who use the services
SUCCESS SKILLS
- Incoming student,
including student-athletes, take placement tests in English, Reading and
Mathematics as specified by university policy. Students who
demonstrate the need for remedial work are required to take appropriate
remedial courses.
- Placement testing and
remedial courses are available to all students.
- The requirement of
remedial course work is based upon placement test results and is noted in
the student-athlete handbook, on the YSU web site and by the athletic
advisor.
- These services are
evaluated by their governing units which reside outside of athletics.
STUDY HALL
- All incoming freshmen and
transfer student-athletes are required to attend study table the first
semester of enrollment. Upon satisfactory completion of the term, this
requirement can be eliminated.
- Study hall is available to
all student-athletes during the regular work day.
- Student are informed about
study hall by their coaches, athletic advisors, and the student-athlete
handbook.
- Section I, #3 notes review
of the responsibilities of the advisors, which includes our study hall
availability and monitoring student-athletes in the study table area.
It is a component of a 3-year review process in place to asses the
effectiveness of academic support services.

FRESHMAN & TRANSFER
ORIENTATION
- All students are expected
to attend New Student Orientation ( a new student cannot register unless
they attend or receive a waiver of attendance); all student-athletes meet
with their athletic academic advisor to review academic support; the
student-athlete handbook and YSU web site list and describe all services
available to student-athletes.
- All orientation programs
are available to all students; all student-athletes are assigned an athletic
academic advisor
- All student must attend

services available to student-athletes.
- Athletic department

ACADEMIC PROGRESS MONITORING
& REPORTING
- Athletic academic advisors
provide the following services to all student-athletes:
- Counseling, referral &
monitoring progress toward degree completion
- Monitoring progress
toward eligibility requirements
- Making appropriate
referrals to other departments such as Reading & Study Skills Lab,
Writing Center, Math Assistance Lab, Tutorial Services etc.
- Act as liaison between
athlete, faculty, academic advisor, staff and coaches.
- Conduct orientation
programs to familiarize athletes with the University and academic rules
and regulations
- Consult with coaches
and staff regarding athletes’ progress
- Monitor progress
throughout the semester with periodic grade report requests.
- Maintain and monitory
study hall.
- Academic support is
available to all student-athletes
- Students are informed of
these services via the student-athlete handbook and meetings with advisors
- Results of academic
services evaluation can be found the IAC minutes from May 20th
2005.
ASSISTANCE FOR SPECIAL
ACADEMIC NEEDS
- Student-athletes with
special academic needs are encouraged to register with Disability Services
- The following process is
in place to meet the needs of student-athletes with special academic needs:
- Athletic academic
advisor notifies head coach of academic need
- Head coach meets with
student-athlete to discuss process
- Student-athlete meets
with academic advisor and proceeds with one or more of the following:
attending, study table a designated number of hours per week, enrolling
in tutorial services at the Center for Student Progress, attending
sessions at the Math Assistance Center, Writing Center or Reading &
Study Skills Center, registering for Supplemental Instruction (SI) when
available.
- Student-athlete must
meet with athletic advisor to discuss status
- Athletic advisor send
progress reports to instructor of feedback.
- Athletic advisor
discusses feedback with student-athlete.
- Athletic advisor
discusses feedback with head coach.
- Student-athletes are
no longer considered at risk if:
- “Good academic
standing” status is achieved
- A term gpa of 2.00
or greater is achieved
- Guidelines listed
above are completed
- Head coach and
athletic advisor agree that the student-athlete has demonstrated
his/her ability for independent academic success.
- Support is provided for
any student-athlete who has demonstrated need.
- Students are made aware of
these services via the student-athlete handbook and required meeting with
the athletic academic advisor.
- Athletic department
policies are reviewed in the 3 year Academic Services Evaluation.
- Results of academic
services evaluation can be found the IAC minutes from May 20th
2005.
LEARNING ASSESSMENTS
(Placement Testing)
- Student-athletes take
placements tests following the guidelines specified for all University
students.
- These services are
evaluated by their governing units which reside outside of athletics.
MENTORING
o Peer
Assistants are available to any student at the University; an athletic advisor
can refer a student-athlete to a faculty mentor upon request
o Student-athletes
are made aware of these services via the YSU web site, YSU sport web page and
referrals by the athletic advisors.
o Athletic
department policies are reviewed in the 3 year Academic Services Evaluation.
o Results
of academic services evaluation can be found the IAC minutes from May 20th
2005.

POST-ELIGIBILITY PROGRAMS
- Student-athletes who have
been on an athletic scholarship for the past two years are eligible to apply
for our Fifth-Year Aid Program. Students must have passed a minimum of
24 countable hours the previous academic year to be approved for the grant
- Athletic Academic Advisors
shall make recommendations and assist students in the completion of
nomination forms for awards, which shall include but not be limited to: NCAA
Post-Graduate Degree Award, Walter Byers Scholarship, Degree Completion
Awards.
- Any student-athlete
meeting the criteria and desiring to apply may do so.
- Students are made aware of
these opportunities via the student-athlete handbook and athletic academic
advisors.
- Athletic department
policies are reviewed in the 3 year Academic Services Evaluation.
- Results of academic
services evaluation can be found the IAC minutes from May 20th
2005.
The committee then reviewed the
evaluation questions for Principles 2.1 and 2.2. All evaluation questions
for Principle 2.1 were answered affirmatively. All evaluation questions
for Principle 2.2 were answered affirmatively.
The committee finds that no
Plan for Improvement is necessary for YSU to comply with either Principle 2.1 or
2.2.
A draft of the Academic
Integrity Subcommittee report will be sent to committee members for review.
