YSU Football Extends Win Streak To Five
YOUNGSTOWN,
OH - The No. 10
Youngstown State University football
team won its fifth in a row with a
10-7 win over Cal Poly before a
crowd of 19,682 at Stambaugh Stadium
on Saturday. The crowd was the third
largest in school history.
Senior kicker Mark Griffith (Sr., Boardman, OH) kicked
a 20-yard field goal in the third
quarter that proved to be the
difference. YSU stands at 6-1
overall and will face Northern Iowa
in a Gateway Conference showdown
next Saturday in the UNI Dome.
The Mustangs (2-4) had a chance to take the lead in the
fourth quarter, but Craig Young
fumbled on the YSU 9-yard line with
8:44 to play. The Penguins also
stopped the Mustangs with a fumble
when Luke Schumacher (Jr.,
Woodsfield, OH) sacked Andy
Jepson at the YSU 37-yard line with
1:33 to play in the game.
"Turnovers are the difference-maker," said YSU head coach Jim
Tressel. "If they do not turn it
over, they probably win the game.
Young had 127 yards, but when you
turn it over it erases any of the
good that you did. When you are in a
tight game, one fumble is the
difference in the game."
YSU took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter when Jeff Ryan
(So., Boardman, OH) found
Elliott Giles (Sr., Miami, FL) in the corner of the end zone from
15-yards out. The Penguins went 80
yards in 10 plays.
The Mustangs came right back with a 14-play, 80-yard drive of
their own. Jepson converted a third
and 14 with a 16-yard touchdown pass
to Jason Breenan to knot the score
at 7-7 heading into the half.
The Penguins took their second drive of the second half and
drove down to the four-yard line,
but had to settle for Griffith’s
field goal.
"We have a great group of guys who love to play the game,"
said Tressel. "They will fight and
keep us in a position until we have
a chance to win. The more effort you
give the more fortunate you tend to
be."
Senior Adrian Brown (Sr., Canton, OH) led the Penguins
with 81 yards, while Ryan threw for
144 yards and a score. |
