Football: Dominelli Selected Finalist For
Buck Buchanan Award
YOUNGSTOWN, OH -
Youngstown State University
linebacker Ian Dominelli (Sr., Santa
Barbara, CA) has been selected by
the Sports Network as one of the 16
finalists for the Buck Buchanan
Award, which is presented to the
most outstanding defensive player in
Division I-AA college football. The
winner will be selected by a panel
of 85 media and sports information
directors and announced on Monday,
December 6, 1999, at Mickey Mantle’s
Restaurant in New York City.
Dominelli has been the leader of the Penguin defense, leading the
way with 169 total tackles, which is
fourth-best total in school history
an. He needs just 12 more tackles to
tie Paul Soltis for the most tackles
in school history.
Through 10 games, Dominelli has recorded 10 or more tackles
in all 10 games. He recorded 29
tackles, which was the
second-highest total in school
history, in the Penguins’ 29-20 win
over Northern Iowa on October 23. He
recorded two more 20 tackle
performances this season, notching
23 tackles against Western Illinois
and Illinois State. For his play
against the Leathernecks, Dominelli
was tabbed the Gateway Defensive
Player of the Year.
This year marks the fifth season that The Sports Network has
presented the Buchanan Award. In
1995 The Sports Network chose to
establish an award to recognize the
most outstanding defensive player in
Division I-AA college football to go
along with the Walter Payton and
Eddie Robinson Awards, which were
established in 1987. It was decided
that the award should be named after
one of the most memorable defensive
Division I-AA football players of
all-time, Buck Buchanan. |
