Football: YSU Moves To 2-1 With 13-7 Win Over
Indiana (Pa.)
YOUNGSTOWN, OH - The
Youngstown State University defense
held on a fourth-and-5 play on the
Penguin 42-yard line with less than
a minute to play as YSU held on to
defeat Indiana (Pa.), 13-7, before
15,022 fans at Stambaugh Stadium.
The win moves the Penguins to 2-1 on the season and sets up
next Saturday’s showdown with
Western Illinois at Stambaugh
Stadium.
Trailing 13-0 in the fourth quarter, the Indians (1-1) scored
with 1:44 to play on a four-yard run
by Terrance Wilson. On the ensuing
kickoff, the Indians’ Derek Brinkley
recovered the on-side kick to set up
a possible game-winning drive, but
the Indians could only manage five
yards and the Penguins hung on.
The Penguins (2-1) were held to just 169 yards of total
offense, including 13 yards
passing., but picked off four
first-half passes en route to the
win.
"Our defense came to play," said YSU head coach Jim Tressel.
"I think they are getting better
everyday. They like flying around
together. They are doing a great job
coming up with turnovers, which
whenever we have had a great team
that has been a hallmark of our
defense. They were put up against it
because our offense surely did not
help them."
YSU was stifled all night on offense, but managed to jump out
to a 13-0 first-half lead. Adrian
Brown, who moved into fifth place on
YSU’s all-time rushing list, put the
Penguins ahead, 7-0, on a one-yard
run. The Penguins moved 34 yards on
the opening drive. YSU answered
again in the first quarter when Mark
Griffith connected on a 40-yard
field goal. He also drilled a
28-yard field goal with 1:51 in the
second quarter.
"Indiana has a good defense," said Tressel. They have great
athletes. They came to play and I do
not think we played as well as we
are capable which was disappointing.
You put that combination together
and you are not going to play as
well as you like."
Jeff Ryan threw for a career-low 13 yards, but rushed for 67
yards to lead the Penguins ground
attack. Linebacker Ian Dominelli
recorded 10 tackles, two pass
break-ups and had his first
interception. Cornerback LeVar
Greene also recorded his first two
career interceptions. |
