Football: Penguins Survive and
Advance With Win At Montana
Missoula, Mont. --
Sophomore quarterback Jeff Ryan's 18-yard scoring
run proved to be the difference as
the Youngstown State football team
held off Montana, 30-27, in the
first round of the NCAA I-AA
Playoffs at Washington-Grizzly
Stadium on Saturday.
Trailing 27-23 in the fourth quarter, Ryan drove the Penguins 75
yards in 10 plays and scored the
eventual game-winning touchdown with
5:39 left in the game.
Showing why they were champions of the Big Sky Conference,
the Grizzlies drove all the way down
to the YSU nine-yard line until Drew
Miller was sacked for a loss of
seven yards by senior Dwyte Smiley.
After an incomplete pass, Kris
Hepner missed a 34-yard field goal
with 12 seconds remaining. Ryan took
a knee to end the game.
The Penguins dominated the first quarter, jumping out to a 10-0 on
a 35-yard field goal by senior Mark
Griffith and a one-yard run by Ryan.
YSU built the lead to a 16-6 on
another field goal by Griffith.
The Grizzlies fought all the way back to lead 27-23 in the
fourth quarter on a one-yard run by
Yo Humphrey before the Penguins
mounted their game-winning drive.
Senior
wide receiver Elliott Giles set the
YSU record for receiving yards in a
game with 214 yards, while Ryan
threw for a career-high 281 yards.
The Penguins now return home to face 16th-seed North Carolina
A&T in the quarterfinals. The Aggies
stunned top-seed Tennessee State on
Saturday. |
