YSU Ties NCAA Mark in Rout of Aggies
Youngstown --
The Youngstown State football team tied the NCAA
record for consecutive playoff wins
with a 41-3 win over North Carolina
A&T at Stambaugh Stadium in the
quarterfinals on Saturday.
The Penguins scored on the opening kickoff and never looked
back, jumping out to a 24-3 lead at
the half.
Behind an offensive attack that gained 459 yards of total
offense, the Penguins received two
touchdowns from senior tailback
Adrian Brown and one from freshman
tailback Ime Akpan.
YSU jumped out to a 14-0 lead on a 12-yard run by Brown and a
23-yard pass by sophomore
quarterback Jeff Ryan to senior
tight end Casey Bogerd. Senior Mark
Griffith, who kicked two field goals
in the game, booted a 22-yard field
goal as the Penguins led, 17-0. The
lead was stretched to 24-3 on a
five-yard pass from Ryan to freshman
tight end John Schumacher.
Ryan
was on fire throwing the football,
completing 15-of-17 for 245 yards
and two touchdowns, while senior
wide receiver Elliott Giles caught
four passes for 97 yards.
With the win, YSU advances to semifinals to play host to
Florida A&M. A win over the Rattlers
would not only give YSU the record
for consecutive playoff victories,
but advance the Penguins to the NCAA
Championship Game. |
