Football: YSU Hangs On For a 17-14 Win Over
SMS
YOUNGSTOWN,
Ohio -
Youngstown State University senior
John Berdiner kicked a 24-yard
field goal with 9:00 left in the
fourth quarter that lifted the
Penguins to a 17-14 win over
Southwest Missouri State on Saturday
at Stambaugh Stadium.
Berdiner ended a
13-play drive with his first career
field that gave the Penguins a 17-7
fourth quarter lead. The Bears (3-6,
1-4) came right back with a one-yard
run by Jason Rigena to cut the
deficit to 17-14, but a crucial
running into the kicker penalty with
just over a minute to play ended any
chance for an upset.
The win moves the Penguins to 8-2 and 5-1 in the Gateway
Football Conference and assures them
of at least second place in the
league.
Senior running back Adrian Brown carried the ball a
career-high 32 times for 163 yards
and one touchdown. It was Brown’s 12th
100-yard game in his career, which
is the third best total in school
history. Brown carried the ball
seven straight times for 34 yards as
the Penguins ran out the final 4:25
of the fourth quarter.
The Bears got on the board first when Sean Adams scored on a
five-yard from Jay Rodgers. The
Penguins came right back with a
nine-play, 63-yard drive with a
five-yard run by Brown, his 52nd
career touchdown, leaving him one
touchdown short of tying the school
record.
After going most of the third quarter scoreless, senior
quarterback Jared Zwick,
subbing for the injured Jeff
Ryan, scored on a 15-yard run
that put the Penguins up 14-7.
The Penguins held when Bruce Hightower picked off a
pass on the YSU 20-yard line that
killed a Bear drive. YSU capitalized
with Berdiner’s game-winning field
goal.
The Penguins will close out the regular season with a visit
to No. 20 Villanova next Saturday in
Philadelphia, Pa. |
