Football: Penguins Sign Six to
Letters of Intent
Youngstown -- The
Youngstown State University football
team signed six in-state
student-athletes to a letter of
intent, Head Coach Jon Heacock
announced on Feb. 7, 2001.
On Wednesday, the Penguins inked offensive lineman John
Bartos III (Youngstown),
linebacker Joe Juby (Garfield
Heights), offensive lineman Tony
Limongi (Niles), running
back/defensive back Pete Perry
(Poland), linebacker Justin
Scholes (Mentor) and defensive
lineman Scott Wahl
(Cincinnati) to play football for
YSU.
Heacock said he is pleased with his first recruiting class,
and although not big in numbers, the
six signees address the Penguins’
immediate needs. YSU will have 22
seniors for the 2001 campaign.
"I am very pleased with this class," Heacock said. "We had
some positions we needed help with
more than other spots on our roster,
and by signing these six young men
we have helped fill those particular
needs."
The Penguins added bulk to the offensive line adding Bartos
III and Limongi. Both players are
300 pounds and will help add depth
and size to the YSU offensive line.
Bartos III was a key cog in Urusline
High School’s march to the Division
IV State Championship and a 14-1
record. Perry can play running back
and defensive back. At Poland, he
had more than 4,000 total offensive
yards in his career and scored 38
touchdowns.
On the defensive side of the ball, YSU added a defensive
lineman and two linebackers. On the
defensive line, Wahl had 126 tackles
as a senior at Amelia High School in
Cincinnati. Scholes played
linebacker at Lake Catholic High
School in Mentor and recorded 100
tackles in his final season. Juby
was an honorable-mention all-state
pick at Garfield Heights High
School. He finished the year with an
impressive 171 tackles in 11 games.
Included in that total was a 23-stop
performance against Lakewood High
School.
