Football: Penguins Romp Past Cal Poly 35-13
San Luis Obispo, Calif. -- The ninth-ranked Youngstown State
football team concluded the regular
season with a 35-13 win at Cal Poly
in front of a crowd of 4,178 at
Mustang Stadium on Saturday
afternoon.
The Penguins, who finished the regular season with a 9-2
record, jumped out to a 21-0 lead at
halftime and never looked back in
their second victory over the
Mustangs in as many years. Cal Poly
ends the year with a 3-8 record.
Sophomore tailback P.J. Mays led the offensive charge for YSU
running for a career-high 127 yards
on 24 carries. Mays had touchdown
runs of four and one yard, the third
time this year he has scored two
touchdowns in a game. Overall, the
Penguins finished with 367 yards
total offense, 255 of which came on
the ground.
In the first quarter, YSU took a 7-0 lead when Jeff Ryan
threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to
Brandon Pedraza. With the touchdown
completion, Ryan became the school’s
all-time leader in career touchdown
passes breaking the mark of 40 held
by Keith Snoddy and Trenton Lykes.
On the final play of the quarter, Mays scored on a four-yard
run to make the score 14-0. Pedraza
and Ryan hooked up again with 1:02
left before the half on an 18-yard
score. The play capped an 80-yard
10-play drive that put the Penguins
ahead by 21 points at the
intermission. Ryan finished the day
completing six passes for 112 yards
and two touchdowns. He ran for 74
yards on nine carries, his
second-best outing of the season.
Cal Poly cut into the YSU lead in the third quarter when
Kasim Osgood caught a 17-yard
touchdown pass from backup
quarterback Kevin Cooper that cut
the YSU lead to 21-7. Cooper
replaced starter Seth Burford who
was knocked out of the game in the
first half with a concussion.
The Penguins answered on their next possesion moving 70 yards
on 10 plays to rebuild a 21-point
advantage when Eric Lockhart bulled
his way into the end zone from a
yard out.
Osgood caught his second touchdown pass of the game from
Cooper when the two connected on a
21-yard touchdown pass with 1:31
left in the third. The extra-point
attempt failed leaving the Penguins
with a 28-13 lead. Osgood finished
the game with 13 catches, two
touchdowns and 164 yards.
In the fourth, the YSU defense held Cal Poly in check and had
a big hand in the Penguins’ final
touchdown of the game when Bob Sivik
intercepted a Cooper pass and
returned it 37 yards to the Cal Poly
four-yard line. From there, Mays had
two carries and scored on a one-yard
run with 3:53 left.
YSU senior middle linebacker Tim Johnson had a team-best 14
tackles and defensive back Chris
Conwell recorded a career-high 10.
The Penguins intercepted two passes
in the game.
The win marked the ninth time in 15 seasons that Head Coach
Jim Tressel has guided YSU to
nine-or-more wins in a year. |
