Football: Bob Dove Inducted Into NFF Hall of Fame
New York City -- Long-time Youngstown State football
assistant coach and two-time Notre
Dame All-American, Bob Dove, will be
one of 14 formers player and two
coaches who will be officially
inducted into the College Football
Hall of Fame at The National
Football Foundation's 43rd Annual
Awards Dinner tonight in New York
City.
Dove was a consensus All-American at Notre Dame in both 1941
and 1942. He is the first former
player to be chosen to the Hall of
Fame by the Honors Review Committee,
which reviews players who played
more than 50 years ago.
Dove was a three-year starter for the Irish and in 1940, was
the first sophomore to start at
Notre Dame since 1929. As a senior,
he was the recipient of the Knute
Rockne Memorial Trophy, honoring the
nation's most outstanding lineman.
For his efforts during his
three-year career, he was a
second-team selection on Street &
Smith's All-Time Dream Team from
1941 through 1990.
Following his collegiate career, Dove was a third-round draft
pick of the Washington Redskins, but
was summoned to military service and
served three years for the Marine
Corps. After his tour of duty, Dove
returned to the football field and
played for nine seasons with several
professional teams.
After his playing career, he became a football coach with
stints at the University of Detroit,
Hiram College, the Detroit Lions and
the Buffalo Bills before coming to
Youngstown State. He was an
assistant for the Penguins from 1969
through 1986. In his tenure, Dove
worked with all four of YSU's head
football coaches.
YSU Head Coach Jim Tressel, who will be in attendance at the
banquet this evening, said it has
been a privilege to work with and
get to know Dove the past 15 years.
"Bob Dove is a tremendous college football mind and an
outstanding person," Tressel said.
"He has been a great asset to the
Youngstown State football program
and this is honor a long time coming
for him. Everyone at YSU is very
proud of this accomplishment."
Dove was named the 2000 Penguin of the Year and in 1989 he
was inducted into the YSU Athletics
Hall of Fame.
The class of 16, which includes John Elway, Marcus Allen,
Johnny Rodgers and Terry Donahue,
will be officially enshrined into
the College Football Hall of Fame in
August 2001. |
