Football: YSU Shuts Out Edinboro 33-0
Youngstown, Ohio -- The Nos. 3/7 Youngstown State football team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 33-0 shutout victory over Edinboro on Saturday night at Stambaugh Stadium.
The Penguins, who are 2-0 for the fourth time in the past five seasons, rolled up 423 yards of total offense and took advantage of an opportunistic defense that forced five Edinboro turnovers. YSU held the Fighting Scots (0-2) to just 133 yards of total offense and Chris Conwell led the way with two interceptions and a forced fumble. Charles Mister and LeVar Greene each added picks as the YSU defense has now caused 10 turnovers in the first two games. The shutout was the first for the Penguins since 1997 when they shutout Illinois State 13-0.
Offensively, quarterback Jeff Ryan threw for two touchdowns and ran for another while completing 10-of-18 passes for 115 yards. Sophomore Colby Street threw his first career touchdown pass, a 37-yarder to Brandon Pedraza in the second quarter and completed 3-of-4 passes on the night.
The tri-tailbacks of Eric Lochart, P.J. Mays and Josiah Doby rushed for 195 of YSU’s 247 yards rushing on 40 carries.
Freshman placekicker Tony Bartholomew gave the Penguins a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on a 24-yard field goal. That kick was set up by a Bruce Hightower blocked punt.
In the second stanza, the Penguins’ offense caught fire scoring three touchdowns. Ryan threw a 14-yard touchdown strike to sophomore Jerald Burley. The catch was the first of Burley’s career. Ryan scored on a two-yard keeper with 6:41 remaining in the half and then with 2:02 left, Street hit Pedraza to give the Penguins a 23-0 halftime lead.
Bartholomew made a 22-yard field goal in the third to give YSU a 26-0 lead. And in the fourth quarter, Ryan threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to fullback Greg Giannios.
The Penguins return to action on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. when they face in-state rival Kent State (0-2). The Golden Flashes have lost to Pittsburgh and Purdue this season.
