No. 7/7 Penguins Look to Rebound Against Indiana State

The No. 7/7 (Coaches/SportsNetwork) Youngstown State Penguins will try to bounce back on Saturday against Indiana State and keep alive their chance at a Gateway Football Conference championship. Last Saturday, YSU lost it first game of the season losing at No. 6/7 Western Illinois, 24-10. Indiana State enters the game without a win in eight games. Kickoff for the Gateway Television game of the week is 4:06 p.m. (EST).
Youngstown State, 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference, had their six-game winning streak and eight-game road win streak snapped losing 24-10 to the Leathernecks. The Penguins tied the game in the first quarter, but had to play catch-up the rest of the game. WIU led 17-7 at halftime before Jake Stewart made a 28-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 17-10. In the fourth quarter, Jeff Ryan’s pass on a third and five was intercepted by Ryle Irish who raced 44 yards for a touchdown.
Indiana State (0-8 and 0-4) has struggled all year and with it’s last three games on the road could finish the season without a victory for the first time since 1951. Last Saturday, Northern Iowa beat the Sycamores 49-17. This season ISU has allowed more than 40 points in five games and allows 498 yards per game to its opponents.
All-time against ISU the Penguins have had success winning eight of nine games.
The contest is the first of three straight home games for YSU after playing four of their last five games on the road. At home this year, YSU is 3-0 with wins over Slippery Rock, Edinboro and Northern Iowa. In their last home contest, YSU drew 21,119 fans to the Northern Iowa contest to set a school and conference record. Following Saturday’s game, the Penguins play host to Hofstra on Nov. 4 and Southern Illinois on Nov. 11.
Since YSU joined the conference in 1997, the Penguins are 15-7 in league play and are 7-3 at home in conference games.

Just before the half, Joe Lopez made a 25-yard field goal to put the WIU ahead 17-7. On its first drive of the second half, YSU cut the deficit to seven on a 28-yard field goal by Jake Stewart.
