Football: Penguins Will Play Host
to Elon on Nov. 17
Youngstown, Ohio -- The Youngstown State football
game against Wofford College has
been canceled and instead, the
Penguins will play host to Division
I-AA Independent Elon University at
1 p.m. on Nov. 17. The move allows
for Wofford to make adjustments to
its schedule moving a conference
game and adding a contest with South
Carolina.
On Friday afternoon, Youngstown State and Wofford agreed to
cancel the Nov. 17 contest allowing
the Terriers to move their scheduled
Nov. 3 game against conference foe
East Tennessee State to Nov. 17.
With the schedule change, Wofford
will play at South Carolina on Nov.
3 giving the Gamecocks an 11th game
for the season.
YSU Athletic Director Ron Strollo said the move helps all
schools involved and YSU is helping
a fellow I-AA schools without having
to make considerable changes to its
schedule.
"The opportunity to schedule a game like that doesn’t come
along for many I-AA schools very
often and as a group we know when an
opportunity like that comes along
you have to take," Strollo said.
"This was a great situation for
everyone involved and we look
forward to playing against a
highly-competitive Elon team."
Elon is 0-3 this season with losses at James Madison, Furman
and North Carolina A&T. Elon has
games against Gateway Football
Conference member Western Kentucky,
Hofstra and two-time defending
National Champion Georgia Southern
scheduled for later in the year. The
Phoenix finished the 2000 season
with a 7-4 record and were just
outside of the Top 25 at season’s
end.
On Thursday, the Penguins added their 11th game of the
season, a Nov. 24 contest at
Marshall. |
