Football: YSU Announces 2001 Football Schedule
Youngstown – The 2001 Youngstown State University
football schedule will feature seven
home games, first-year Head Coach
Jon Heacock announced on Wednesday.
The Penguins will play four of seven
Gateway Football Conference games at
Stambaugh Stadium.
"Obviously, anytime you have seven home games it is a big
help to your team," Heacock said.
"The bottom line is we have to play
well at home. In the past we’ve
played well in Stambaugh (Stadium)
and the Gateway is a tough
conference to play in, so I think it
will definitely help."
The Penguins open the 2001 campaign at home against Lock
Haven on Thursday, Aug. 30, at 7:30
p.m. and Clarion on Sept. 8, 7 p.m.
Youngstown State then travels to Mid-American Conference foe
Toledo, which went 10-1 last season
and finished ranked No. 25 in the
final Associated Press poll, on Sept
15 for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
The Penguins return to Stambaugh Stadium to open Gateway
Football Conference play against
defending league champion Western
Illinois on Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. After
a two-game road-trip to Northern
Iowa on Sept 29 at 5:05 p.m. and
Indiana State on Oct. 6 at 7:30
p.m., the Penguins host Southwest
Missouri State on Oct. 13 at 4 p.m..
The 2001 YSU Homecoming Game is slated for Oct. 20 against
Illinois State at 4 p.m. while the
Penguins close out the three-game
homestand against first-year Gateway
Conference member and NCAA I-AA
playoff participant Western Kentucky
on Oct. 27 at 4 p.m.
The Penguins finish Gateway action at Southern Illinois on
Nov. 3 at 1:30 p.m. After an open
week on Nov. 10, the Penguins
conclude the 2001 regular season at
home against Wofford on Nov. 17 at 1
