Football: YSU Announces Annual Award Winners
Youngstown -- The Youngstown State football
team handed out their individual
awards for the 2001 season at their
annual banquet on Saturday with
senior defensive lineman Bob Sivik
earning two awards and senior
offensive tackle Pat Crummey being
named the squad’s Jim Zdelar
Offensive Lineman of the Year for
the second straight year. Crummey
becomes the first two-time winner of
the Zdelar Award in school history.
The Penguins finished the 2001 campaign with an 8-3
overall record and were 5-2
finishing while tying for second in
the Gateway Football Conference
under first-year coach Jon Heacock.
Heacock’s eight victories set a
school record for wins by a
first-year coach and tied for the
second-most ever by a first-season
Gateway Conference mentor.
Crummey, who was the Zdelar winner last season as a
junior, was named first-team
All-American by the Sports Network,
The Associated Press and the
American Football Coaches
Association.
Sivik was the only YSU student-athlete to win two
awards earning the second-ever
Robert Frost Outreach
Man-of-the-Year award along with
being named the Jermaine Hopkins
Defensive Lineman of the Year.
Senior quarterback Jeff Ryan was named the team’s most
valuable player earning the Jim
Delserone MVP Award. In his career,
Ryan set school career marks for
touchdown passes, total offensive
yards, total offensive plays,
quarterback rushing yards and was
second in passing yards.
Junior wide receiver/kick returner Jerald Burley was
named the McFadden/Wilkins
Specialist Player of the Year.
Burley was a first-team All-Gateway
Football Conference selection.
Junior tailback P.J. Mays, who was the Gateway Football
Conference’s Offensive Player of the
Year, was named the team’s most
outstanding offensive player while
senior cornerback Antulio Aroche was
named YSU’s outstanding defensive
player.
Senior fullback Jerry Johnson earned the Dr. Spurgeon
Torchbearer Award while senior
cornerback, and All-American, LeVar
Greene was named the Ron Stoops Most
Inspirational Player. Senior
linebacker Mike Thomas earned the
Four Square Club Academic Award.
The Penguins are scheduled to begin spring drills on
Wednesday, March 20.
