Football: Annual Player Awards Presented At Banquet
Youngstown -- Senior tailback P.J. Mays and senior
linebacker Jon Tekac were presented
with two awards on Saturday at the
Youngstown State football team's
Annual Football Awards Banquet in
the Kilcawley Center on the YSU
campus.
Tekac took the honors of Outstanding Defensive Player and the
Ron Stoops Inspirational Player
while Mays was tabbed the John
Delserone Most Valuable Player and
the Outstanding Offensive Player.
Mays becomes just the second player
in school history joining Trenton
Lykes (1986 and 1987) as a two-time
winner of the Outstanding Offensive
Player Award.
Senior tight end Dennis Dlugosz was named the team's Jim
Zdelar Offensive Lineman of the
Year. Dlugosz becomes just the
second tight end to earn the
Offensive Lineman honor joining Tim
Tyrrell who won the award in 1997.
Senior defensive tackle Guy Mazard
was named the Jermaine Hopkins
Defensive Lineman of the Year.
Senior tight end John Schumacher was
named the third Robert Frost
Outreach Man of the Year. The award
was first presented in 2000.
Senior free safety Anthony Barone was named the Dr. Spurgeon
Torchbearer recipient. Sophomore
punter Ryan Martino was named the
Four Square Academic Player of the
Year. Martino had a 3.78 cumulative
grade-point average in Merchandising
during the 2001 Fall and 2002 Spring
semester.
Players earning
fourth-year awards include seniors
Anthony Barone, Jerald Burley,
Dennis Dlugosz, P.J. Mays, Matt
Mechling, Wendell Parrish, John
Schumacher, Martin Stachowicz, Colby
Street, Russell Stuvaints and Jon
Tekac.
Players earning first-year awards include Mike Andrews,
Brandon Brown, Shawn Carlson, Tanner
Dunlap, Jake Godec, Dean Jewell, Joe
Juby, Norris Kennedy, Aaron
Marshall, Matt Rycraft, Justin
Scholes, Kyle Smith and Larry
Williams.
