Football: YSU Places Three On Gateway Newcomer Team
St. Louis, Mo. -- The Youngstown State football team
placed three student-athletes on the
Gateway Football Conference's
All-Newcomer Team, the league
announced on Monday. Redshirt
freshman quarterback Aaron Marshall,
junior offensive guard Will Sanders
and junior defensive back Sherod
Holmes were the three Penguins named
All-Newcomers.
Marshall helped lead the Penguins to a 6-2 record after
taking over the quarterback duties
after the first three games of the
season. On the year, he completed
52-of-98 passes for six touchdowns
and 711 yards while adding 232 yards
rushing on 103 attempts. He played
the first three games of the season
as a wide receiver.
Sanders started all
11 games on the offensive line --
two at center and nine at guard --
for the Penguins. On three
occasions, he was named YSU's
Offensive Lineman of the Game.
Holmes helped make the YSU secondary one of the best in the
conference with his performance. On
the season he tied for the team lead
with three interceptions and was
first with seven pass breakups.
Against Samford he set a school
record with four takeaways -- two
