Football: Mays, Stewart Named Gateway Players of the Week
St. Louis, Mo. -- For the second
straight week, Youngstown State
senior running back P.J. Mays was
named the Gateway Football
Conference Offensive Player of the
Week, while junior placekicker Jake
Stewart earned Special Teams Player
of the Week honors for their
performances against Illinois State,
the league announced. Western
Illinois' Cornell Middlebrook was
named the Defensive Player of the
Week.
Mays rushed for a game-high 146 yards on a season-high
32 carries to lead the Penguins past
Illinois State, 24-17, in Normal,
Ill. He had scoring runs of four and
one yard for the Penguins. It was
Mays' second straight game over 100
yards rushing.
Stewart kicked a 42-yard field goal, made three
extra-points - including a 35-yarder
into the wind - and had a sky kick
recovered by the YSU
kickoff-coverage unit to set up the
winning touchdown against the
Redbirds. |
