Football: Mays Places 11th in Payton Award Voting
Philadelphia, Pa. -- Youngstown State senior tailback
P.J. Mays placed 11th in the 2002
Walter Payton Award voting, The
Sports Network announced this week.
Villanova quarterback Brett Gordon,
Grambling State quarterback Bruce
Eugene and Eastern Illinois
quarterback Tony Romo were selected
as the three invitees to the award
ceremony in Chattanooga, Tenn., on
Dec. 19.
Mays tallied 52 total points while earning two first-place
votes during the process. Overall,
Mays received a total of 20 votes --
for first, second, third, fourth or
fifth -- by a voting panel of more
than 100. He was the second-highest
running back in the voting trailing
only Fordham's Kirwin Watson who had
67 points.
The top four picks in the voting were all quarterbacks with
Montana's John Edwards placing
fourth. |
