Football: Penguins Staff Announces Players of the ISU Game
Youngstown -- Senior tailback P.J. Mays and junior placekicker Jake Stewart, who were both tabbed Gateway Players of the week for their performances against Illinois State, also were the Penguins' Offensive and Special Teams Players of the Game. Joining the group was senior linebacker Russell Stuvaints who was named YSU's Defensive Player of the Game.
Mays ran for 146 yards on a season-high 32 carries and scored two touchdowns. For his career he has been named the YSU Offensive Player of the Game nine times. He is the first five-time single-season honoree since Adrian Brown earned the honor five times in 15 games in 1999.

Stuvaints earned Defensive Player-of-the-Game honors for the second time this season with a nine-tackle effort against the Redbirds. He had two tackles for losses, a forced fumble and a sack. Stewart picked up his second special teams honor of the season after making a 42-yard field goal, three extra points -- including one from 35 yards into the wind -- and having one of his sky kicks recovered to set up the winning touchdown.
In the trenches, senior offensive tackle Andy DeNiro earned his second Jim Zdelar Offensive Lineman-of-the-Game award of the season and senior defensive tackle Matt Mechling earned his third Jermaine Hopkins Defensive Lineman-of-the-Game accolade.
On the scouting units, redshirt freshman offensive guard A.J. Ayala (offense), sophomore linebacker Gerald Dowe (defense) and sophomore punter David Mills (special teams) earned Scout Team Player-of-the-Week honors.
Senior linebacker Jon Tekac garnered the Derek Pixley Hit of the Week and junior fullback Keland Logan was named the Haines Family Player of the Game by the YSU radio broadcast crew.
