Football: Penguins Staff Announces Players of the ISU Game
Youngstown -- Senior tailback P.J. Mays and junior
placekicker Jake Stewart, who were
both tabbed Gateway Players of the
week for their performances against
Illinois State, also were the
Penguins' Offensive and Special
Teams Players of the Game. Joining
the group was senior linebacker
Russell Stuvaints who was named
YSU's Defensive Player of the Game.
Mays ran for 146 yards on a season-high 32 carries and scored
two touchdowns. For his career he
has been named the YSU Offensive
Player of the Game nine times. He is
the first five-time single-season
honoree since Adrian Brown earned
the honor five times in 15 games in
1999.
Stuvaints earned
Defensive Player-of-the-Game honors
for the second time this season with
a nine-tackle effort against the
Redbirds. He had two tackles for
losses, a forced fumble and a sack.
Stewart picked up his second special
teams honor of the season after
making a 42-yard field goal, three
extra points -- including one from
35 yards into the wind -- and having
one of his sky kicks recovered to
set up the winning touchdown.
In the trenches, senior offensive tackle Andy DeNiro earned
his second Jim Zdelar Offensive
Lineman-of-the-Game award of the
season and senior defensive tackle
Matt Mechling earned his third
Jermaine Hopkins Defensive
Lineman-of-the-Game accolade.
On the scouting units, redshirt freshman offensive guard A.J.
Ayala (offense), sophomore
linebacker Gerald Dowe (defense) and
sophomore punter David Mills
(special teams) earned Scout Team
Player-of-the-Week honors.
Senior linebacker Jon Tekac garnered the Derek Pixley Hit of
the Week and junior fullback Keland
Logan was named the Haines Family
Player of the Game by the YSU radio
broadcast crew. |
