Football: Coaching Staff Names Players of the Samford Game
Youngstown -- Senior tailback P.J. Mays, junior
defensive back Sherod Holmes and
junior placekicker Jake Stewart --
all Gateway Football Conference
Players of the Week -- were honored
as YSU's Players of the Game against
Samford for their efforts.
Mays had 137 yards rushing on 23 carries and scored two
touchdowns -- one on a 13-yard run
and another on a 51-yard screen
pass. Holmest set a school record
with four takeaways -- two
interceptions and two fumbles --
also broke up two passes and had six
tackles. Stewart kicked three field
goals and four extra points to
accumulate 13 points in the win.
For Mays he earned his sixth Player-of-the-Game Award of
season in just 11 games. His six
single-season awards are a school
record.
Senior tight end John Schumacher was named the Jim Zdelar
Offensive Lineman of the Game while
senior defensive end Martin
Stachowicz was tabbed as the
Jermaine Hopkins Defensive Lineman
of the Game.
Taking scout-team honors were sophomore quarterback Matt
Rycraft (offense), redshirt freshman
defensive lineman Ryan Clonch
(defense) and freshman wide receiver
Cody Clark (special teams).
Center Nick Roberts
earned the Pixley Hit of the Week
for a pancake block during the game
while defensive back Sherod Holmes
was named the Haines Family Player
of the Game by the YSU radio
broadcast crew. Holmes set a school
record with four takeaways -- two
interceptions and two fumbles -- and
also had six tackles and two pass
breakups. |
