Football: Coaching Staff Selects Players of the Week
Youngstown -- For the second consecutive week junior
tailback Mike Burns was named the
Youngstown State Offensive Player of
the Game, this time for a 123-yard
12-carry, one touchdown effort in a
21-9 win over Southern Illinois. The
Defensive Player of the Game was
sophomore strong safety Mike Bracken
and senior linebacker Russell
Stuvaints was named the Special
Teams Player of the Game.
Bracken recorded eight total tackles, forced a fumble and had
a pass breakup in the victory. He is
tied for the team lead with season
with five passes broken up.
Stuvaints returned the first two
kickoffs of his career for a total
of 18 yards. Both returns were 19
yards each, including one that he
brought out from seven yards deep in
the end zone.
For the third time this season offensive guard Will Sanders
was named the Jim Zdelar Offensive
Lineman of the Game. Sanders also
earned the honor against Florida
Atlantic and Western Kentucky.
Senior linebacker Jon Tekac was
named the Jermaine Hopkins Defensive
Lineman of the Game for the first
time this season. Tekac, a
three-time defensive player of the
game, had eight solo tackles, six
assisted stops and a forced fumble.
Earning scout-team accolades were freshman tailback Josh
Cayson (offense), junior linebacker
Mike Nuzzo (defense) and sophomore
punter Ryan Martino (special teams).
Stuvaints was tabbed as the Haines Family Player of the Game
by the YSU broadcast tandem of Bob
Hannon and Dick Hartzell. Senior
defensive end Martin Stachowicz
earned the Wash On Wheels Derek
Pixley Hit of the Game for a sack on
SIU quarterback Joel Sambursky.
Youngstown State plays its final road game of the season at
Illinois State on Saturday in
Normal, Ill. |
