Football: Penguins Kick-Off 2003 Campaign With Spring Workouts
    Youngstown --
The Youngstown State Football team began their first of 15 spring workouts today for the 2003 season on Friday at Stambaugh Stadium with hopes of returning to the success the team had in the 1990s.
Third-year Head Coach Jon Heacock emphasized that it's not just talent that will bring the Penguins back to glory, it is the mental game that begins in the spring.
"The things we are looking for to improve this program is not necessarily based on talent," Heacock said.  "It's based on attitude and effort and working hard and studying."
Heacock also stressed that the spring season is the time when younger players get a chance to step up and earn a spot on a team that lost eight seniors on defense and Second-Team All-American running back P.J. Mays.
"You get a chance to look at some of the guys who came in last year," Heacock said.  "It's a great learning experience and it's opportunity to gain experience for those who don't have any."
The Penguins will begin full pads practice on Sunday, March 23, and will hold their first jersey scrimmage on April 4.  The spring session concludes on April 16 with the annual Red vs. White Spring Game at 7 p.m.
