Thiessen Highlights All-Gateway Academic Picks
St. Louis, Mo. -- Senior free safety Scott Thiessen was named to the Gateway Football Conference's Academic First Team, the league announced on Monday. Overall, YSU had six players named academic all-conference honors.
Senior linebacker Justin Dellarose and senior fullback Chris DiMauro were both second-team all-academic selections. Senior tailback Mike Burns, sophomore tight end Shawn Carlson and sophomore wide receiver Kyle Smith earned Honorable-Mention All-Gateway academic honors.
Thiessen, who was also a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree, owns a 3.59 GPA in Special Education. This past fall he was second on the Penguins with 86 total tackles while recording three interceptions.
DiMauro was a second-team CoSIDA Academic All-District pick and Dellarose was an honorable-mention Gateway All-Academic pick a year ago.
Overall, YSU's six honorees ranked second in the conference behind seven from Indiana State. Nominees for the team must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.00 cumulative grade-point average. Student-athletes must have achieved sophomore academic and athletic standing at their institutions and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
