Football: Waymann Peters, Nick
Terracina Honored by Gateway
St. Louis, Mo. -- Youngstown State
senior cornerback Waymann Peters
(Akron, Ohio) and junior placekicker
Nick Terracina (Lake Charles, La.)
were among four individuals honored
by the Gateway Football Conference
as players of the week, the league
announced on Sunday.
Peters was named the Defensive Player of
the Week while Terracina was named
the co-Special Teams Player of the
Week along with UNI's Tyler Johnson.
Indiana State wide receiver Sam
Logan was tabbed the Offensive
Player of the Week.
Peters returned an interception for a TD in
YSU's 34-3 victory over Liberty on
Saturday. His first career pick came
at a great time with the Penguins
leading 7-3 in the second quarter,
Peters intercepted a Gus Condon pass
and returned it 27 yards for a
touchdown. He also had three total
tackles in the game.
Terracina broke the school record by
drilling a 56-yard field goal as
time expired in the first half of
YSU's 34-3 victory over Liberty. The
record had been previously held by
former NFL Pro Bowler Paul McFadden
and current St. Louis Rams kicker
Jeff Wilkins. McFadden made his
54-yard field goal off a tee in
September 1980 while Wilkins' boot
came in the UNI Dome in December
1992. Terracina wasn't done, as he
also kicked a 47-yarder into the
wind in the fourth quarter. He also
made four extra points in the
victory.
The Penguins return to Stambaugh Stadium
this Saturday night when they open
Gateway Conference play against SMS. |
