Football: Stuvaints Plays For Steelers On Sunday
Pittsburgh, Pa. -- Former Youngstown State linebacker
Russell Stuvaints made his NFL debut
on Sunday playing for the Pittsburgh
Steelers against the Oakland Raiders
at Heinz Field. Stuvaints becomes
the 19th former YSU football player
to appear in an NFL contest and the
fourth to play for Pittsburgh.
Stuvaints, a native of McKeesport, Pa., played special teams
in the contest as the Steelers beat
the Raiders 27-7. Also, another
former Penguins linebacker, Tim
Johnson played for the Raiders
recording a team-high nine tackles
in the game.
He played for the Penguins from 1999 through 2002.
Stuvaints was an honorable-mention
All-Gateway selection as a senior
and a second-team pick as a junior.
He recorded 194 tackles in his
career, including a career-best 91
in 2002. He had a team-best 62
unassisted stops for the 7-4
Penguins. He was also an
honorable-mention All-American as a
junior.
Last spring, he signed a free-agent contract with the
Steelers and had been a member of
the practice squad before being
activated earlier in the week. |
