Football: Coaches Announce Weekly Award Winners
Youngstown --
Sophomore wide receiver Kyle Smith,
defensive lineman Nate Baston and
sophomore punter Joe Bishop were
named the YSU football team's
players of the game for their
performances against Northern Iowa,
the coaching staff announced on
Tuesday.
Smith, the offensive player of the game, had 142 yards
receiving on seven catches. His
yardage total was the most by a YSU
player since Elliot Giles' 214-yard
school-record performance against
Montana in the 1999 playoffs. Baston
was named the Penguins' defensive
player of the week for the second
consecutive game. Bishop averaged
40.6 yards on nine punts and placed
five kicks inside the UNI 20-yard
line.
Junior tight end Mike Roberts was tabbed the Jim Zdelar
Offensive Lineman of the Game while
sophomore defensive tackle Ron
John-Finn was the Jermaine Hopkins
Defensive Lineman of the Game.
Roberts caught four passes in the
game while John-Finn blocked an
extra point and had four total
tackles.
Earning scout-team honors for their performances throughout
last week were redshirt freshman
wide receiver Cody Clark (offense),
freshman linebacker Blake Halverson
(defense) and senior walk-on
tailback Joe Patoray (special
teams).
Smith was also named the Haines Family Player of the Game by
the YSU radio broadcasters.
The Penguins play their second top-10 team in a week on
Saturday when they travel to
Southern Illinois on Nov. 8.. |
