Football: Coaches Announce Weekly Award Winners
Youngstown -- Sophomore wide receiver Kyle Smith, defensive lineman Nate Baston and sophomore punter Joe Bishop were named the YSU football team's players of the game for their performances against Northern Iowa, the coaching staff announced on Tuesday.
Smith, the offensive player of the game, had 142 yards receiving on seven catches. His yardage total was the most by a YSU player since Elliot Giles' 214-yard school-record performance against Montana in the 1999 playoffs. Baston was named the Penguins' defensive player of the week for the second consecutive game. Bishop averaged 40.6 yards on nine punts and placed five kicks inside the UNI 20-yard line.
Junior tight end Mike Roberts was tabbed the Jim Zdelar Offensive Lineman of the Game while sophomore defensive tackle Ron John-Finn was the Jermaine Hopkins Defensive Lineman of the Game. Roberts caught four passes in the game while John-Finn blocked an extra point and had four total tackles.
Earning scout-team honors for their performances throughout last week were redshirt freshman wide receiver Cody Clark (offense), freshman linebacker Blake Halverson (defense) and senior walk-on tailback Joe Patoray (special teams).
Smith was also named the Haines Family Player of the Game by the YSU radio broadcasters.
The Penguins play their second top-10 team in a week on Saturday when they travel to Southern Illinois on Nov. 8.
