Football: Penguins End Season With Loss to Western Kentucky
Youngstown -- The Youngstown State football team closed out
the season with a 37-13 loss to
seventh-ranked Western Kentucky on
Saturday afternoon at Stambaugh
Stadium.
The Penguins (5-7 overall and 2-5 in the Gateway) trailed
immediately after WKU's Jeremy
Chandler returned the opening
kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown.
YSU tied the game 10-10 but Dennis
Mitchell intercepted an Aaron
Marshall pass returning 84 yards for
a score and the Hilltoppers (8-3 and
5-2) never looked back.
YSU trailed 10-3 in the second quarter before senior tailback
Josiah Doby tied the game on a
12-yard touchdown run with 6:04 left
in the second. The Penguins kept the
pressure on when Waymann Peters
intercepted a Justin Haddix pass and
returned it to the WKU 36.
On first-and-10 at the 26, Marshall's pass was picked off by
Mitchell who returned it 84 yards
for a score. Just before half, WKU
added an 18-yard field goal by Matt
Lange as time expired building a
20-10 halftime advantage.
YSU started the second half on a rough note when Josh Cayson
fumbled the opening kickoff and WKU
recovered at the YSU 38. Five plays
later, Lerron Moore scored from 17
yards out building the lead to
27-10.
Nick Terracina added a 41-yard field goal to cutting the
deficit to 27-13, but that was as
close as the Penguins could get.
Lange kicked a 42-yard field goal and Moore scored on a
33-yard scoot up the middle to round
out the scoring.
Moore finished the game with 134 yards on 25 carries. Doby
was the top rusher for YSU finishing
with 64 yards on 17 carries.
Marshall completed 17-of-28 passes
for 154 yards, but threw two
interceptions.
For the game, Western Kentucky finished with 398 total
offensive yards while YSU had 263. |
