Penguin Duo Plays Big Part in Sunday Victories
Youngstown -- Two former
Youngstown State football standouts
-- Russell Stuvaints and Jeff
Wilkins -- played big parts in their
respective NFL team's victories on
Sunday afternoon.
Stuvaints, a second-year free safety with the Pittsburgh
Steelers, returned a fumble 24 yards
for a touchdown in a 24-10 victory
over their rival the Cleveland
Browns. With the win, the Steelers
continue to have the best record in
the NFL at 8-1. Stuvaints was a
linebacker for the Penguins from
1999 through 2002.
Wilkins, who is in his eighth-year with the St. Louis Rams,
kicked field goals of 23, 36 and 47
yards and added two extra points in
a 23-12 victory over the Seattle
Seahawks. With the win, the Rams
pulled even with the Seahawks in the
NFC West standings, but own the
tie-breaker having beaten Seattle
twice this year. Wilkins was an
All-America placekicker at YSU from
1990 through 1993.
Not all was perfect for Wilkins over the weekend however. On
Saturday, YSU senior placekicker
Nick Terracina eclipsed his school
record for consecutive conversion
kicks. Wilkins had made 46 straight
spanning portions of the 1992 and
1993 seasons. Terracina made all 31
of his PATs in 2004 after making his
last 17 of the 2003 campaign to
finish with 48 straight. On Saturday
at SMS, he made four conversions to
break the 11-year-old record. |
