News and Notes Recapping the 2004 Season
The Penguins completed their 64th season of football this
past Saturday at SMS. Youngstown State came on strong at the end of the season
winning two its final three games. YSU had plenty of good performances
throughout the year and here are some news and notes on this past campaign.
• Kyle Smith, junior wide receiver and
punt returner, moved in to 20th place on the YSU career all-time receiving
rankings with 1,054 yards on 64 receptions. In his career, he has returned 47
punts -- fourth most in school history -- for a total of 313 yards -- tied for
fourth most in school history. Smith also finished the year by catching a pass
in every game this season and will take a streak of 22 consecutive games with a
pass reception into 2005.
• Nick Terracina, senior placekicker,
broke the school record for consecutive point-after touchdown kicks. Terracina
finished his career by making his last 48 PAT kicks breaking the school record
of 46 held by Jeff Wilkins. Terracina also completed the first perfect PAT
season for YSU since 1986 by going a 31-of-31 on the year.
• Terracina led the Penguins in scoring
with 64 points after leading the team with 60 points a year ago. It marks the
first time since 1984 and 1985 and is just the second time in school history
that the same kicker (John Dowling) led the team in scoring in consecutive
seasons.
• Tom Zetts, redshirt freshman
quarterback, completed 60.4 percent of his passes by converting 154-of-255
tosses for 1,822. He threw 16 touchdown passes and just seven interceptions on
the year. His 60.4 completion percentage ranks as the third best (and was best
by a freshman) in a regular season in school history behind Demond Tidwell's
63.5 in 1997 and Mark Brungard 60.5 in 1994. Zetts' 255 passes were the most in
a regular season since Brungard's 311 in 1995 while his completions were the
most since Brungard's 165 in 1995 as well. He also had three 200-yard plus
passing games, the most in a single regular season since Jeff Ryan's three in
the 1999 regular season .
• Jeremiah Wright, sophomore linebacker,
recorded a team-high 91 tackles for the season. He became the first sophomore to
lead the squad in total tackles for a year since Dwyte Smiley had 92 in 1997.
• Joe Bishop, sophomore punter, helped YSU
average 38.3 yards per punt in 2004 after the Penguins averaged 38.8 yards a
kick in 2003. It is only the second time since 1995 that Youngstown State has
averaged more than 38 yards per kick in consecutive seasons (1999 and 2000).
• Mike Bracken, senior strong safety,
finished his career with 235 tackles.
• Every game starters -- Offense: QB Tom
Zetts, WR Kyle Smith, OT John Bartos, OG Tony Limongi. Defense: SS Mike Bracken,
DE Justin Scholes, LB Jeremiah Wright, DT Matt Briggs.
• A total of 18 freshmen played in a
contest for the Penguins this season. True freshmen to see action this year were
OL Josh Tanner, DE Jose Galloza, CB Jermaine Cox, DT Ben Suran and OT Tyler
Booth. Redshirt freshmen to see action in 2004 were: LB Peter Berthold, FS
Dorian Chenault, LB Tim Dewberry, OG Leon Edwards, QB Vince Gliatta, DE Blake
Halverson, CB Greg Jackson, FB Seth Job, OT Matt Kishman, LB Jeff Koval, FB Joe
Nicholson, SS Bob Perez, LB James Terry. LS Bryant Wilson and QB Tom Zetts.
• YSU finished with a remarkably balanced
offense for the year. YSU rushed for a total of 1,879 yards while passing for
1,878 yards. However, that makes for 15 of the last 16 years where the Penguins
have rushed for more yards than passed.
• The total passing yardage of 1,878 was
the most by a YSU team in the regular season since 1995 (2,159). During the
year, YSU had four passing plays of 69 yards or more. The 17 touchdown passes by
Penguin quarterbacks on the year were the most since 2000.
• YSU committed 18 turnovers on the year,
the fewest since 2000.
• Brief Notes: YSU scored 20-or-more
points in eight games...The Penguins have played 657 games in school
history...YSU owns all-time record of 386-254-17. |
