Football: Bishop Garners Gateway Special Teams Honor
St. Louis, Mo. -- Youngstown State punter Joe Bishop was named the Gateway Football Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, the league announced on Sunday. Southern Illinois running back Arkee Whitlock was named the Gateway's Offensive Player of the Week while Western Illinois linebacker Wyatt Green was named the conferences' defensive player of the week.

Bishop averaged 46.0 yards on five punts in the Penguins’ 21-7 defeat at Northern Iowa on Saturday. He had a long of 53 yards in the contest and placed three punts inside the 20-yard line. Of his five punts, one was downed at the eight-yard line and another was downed at the UNI five-yard line. Both of his kickoffs reached the end zone.
Whitlock carried for a career-high 207 yards on 33 attempts to lead SIU to a victory over No. 1-ranked Western Kentucky, 30-21. Whitlock also had three touchdowns. His yardage total was the most by a Saluki back since Muhammad Abdulqaadir rushed for 209 yards against UNI on Oct. 12, 2002. Whitlock also caught one pass for six yards and returned two kicks for 41 yards. He ranks among the nation’s leaders in all-purpose yardage.
Green was part of a Western Illinois defense that shut down the league’s hottest team in a 31-17 victory over No. 18 Illinois State. Green had nine total tackles, including four stops and added 1.5 sacks for minus-10 yards. His second sack came on fourth down to stop a fourth-quarter ISU drive deep in Western Illinois territory. WIU held Illinois State’s offense to its lowest output since the season opener against Iowa State. The win was the first conference victory of the year for the Leathernecks.
Other Penguins who were named Gateway performers of the week this year were Monquatanae Gibson (offense vs. Northeastern), Mike Andrews (defense vs. Illinois State) and Brian Palmer (special teams vs. Illinois State).
