Football: Heacock Named AFCA Region Four Division I-AA Coach of the Year
Waco, Texas -- Youngstown State Head Football Coach
Jon Heacock was named the American
Football Coaches Association Region
Four Division I-AA Coach of the
Year, the organization announced on
Monday.
Heacock, who was the 2005 Bruce Craddock Gateway Football
Coach of the Year, receives the
Region honor for the first time in
his career. He becomes the third
coach in school history to earn the
AFCA District/Regional honors
joining Jim Tressel (Region 3 in
1993, 1994 and 1997) and Bill
Narduzzi (College District 5 in
1979).
Heacock guided Youngstown State to an 8-3 overall mark and a
share of the school's first-ever
Gateway Football Conference title
this past year. YSU was 5-2 in the
league.
In his five years as the Penguins' head coach, he has
accumulated a 31-24 overall mark and
posted three winning seasons in five
campaigns.
Joining Heacock as Regional Coach-of-the-Year selections are
New Hampshire's Sean McDonnell (New
Hampshire), Appalachian State's
Jerry Moore (Region 2), Eastern
Illinois' Bob Spoo (Region 3) and
Texas State's David Baliff (Region
5).
Southern Illinois' Jerry Kill took Region IV
Coach-of-the-Year honors the past
two seasons. James Madison's Mickey
Matthews won the AFCA Division I-AA
Coach-of-the-Year honor last year.
The AFCA recognizes five
regional Coach
of the Year winners in each of the
Association’s four divisions: I-A,
I-AA, Division II (NCAA Division II
and NAIA schools) and Division III.
The winners are selected by Active
members of the Association who vote
for coaches in their respective
regions and divisions. The AFCA will
announce its four National Coach of
the Year winners at the 2006 AFCA
Convention in Dallas. All head
coaches who were eligible for
regional honors are eligible for
national honors as well. |
