Football: Senior Wide Receiver Kyle Smith Invited to 2006 Hula Bowl
Youngstown -- Youngstown State senior
wide receiver Kyle Smith has been
invited to participate in the 2006
Hula Bowl, on Jan. 21 at Aloha
Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii. Smith
becomes the only the second Penguin
to be invited to the game in its
60-year history.
Smith concluded his YSU career with 101 receptions for 1,536 yards
playing in a total of 37 games. He
ranks tied for ninth in all-time
receptions and is 11th in receiving
yards. He also returned 56 punts for
377 yards, both totals rank third
best in school history. During his
career he caught at least one pass
in 30 consecutive games to establish
a new school mark in that category.
The streak ranked as the sixth best
in Gateway Conference history.
As a senior in 2005, Smith was limited to just eight games because
of an injury, but led YSU in
receptions, yards and touchdowns. He
caught 37 passes for 482 yards and
had five touchdowns. He had a
season-high 111 yards on six grabs
against Western Kentucky while
catching a season-best seven passes
against Illinois State. He had two
touchdowns against the Hilltoppers.
"I am
extremely honored and privileged to
represent this school and the
Youngstown community at the 2006
Hula Bowl," Smith said. "It is a
great opportunity and I am very
excited to be selected to
participate in the game."
In 1999, free safety Dwyte Smiley played in the Hula Bowl as
the only other Penguin to play in
the prestigious game. YSU had two
players participate in postseason
games in 1999 as Kawonza Swan played
in the Florida vs. USA All-Star
Game.
The contest will be televised live nationally on ESPN at 7
p.m. Eastern Time. The head coaches
for the game are Auburn's Tommy
Tuberville who will be in charge of
the East Team while Washington's
Tyrone Willingham will lead the West
squad.
