Football: Jackson, Wright, Perry Pick Up Awards For WIU Contest

Youngstown Cornerback Codera Jackson (defense), wide receiver Damian Wright (offense) and cornerback/punt returner Jason Perry (special teams) garnered Hill Barth & King Player of the Game awards for their performances against Western Illinois from the coaching staff.
Jackson was selected as the Hill Barth & King Defensive Player of the Game for the second time this season. He was named the player of the game against Northeastern. Jackson, Perry and Aaron Scales played 84 snaps on defense during the contest. Jackson helped set up the game-winning touchdown with his fifth interception of the season during the fourth quarter. With YSU trailing 21-17, Jackson intercepted a Steve LaFalce pass at the Western Illinois and returned it to the 31. Three plays, later Mason scored a touchdown and the defense held on the ensuing drive to preserve the win. He was credited with five solo tackles by the coaching staff.
Wright was named the Hill Barth & King Offensive Player of the Game. Wright had four receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown against the Leathernecks. In the first quarter, Wright scored on a 39-yard pass from Tom Zetts.
Perry, who was credited with six total tackles and a pass breakup, returned three punts for 72 yards. He had returns of 36 and 30 yards in the game. His 36-yarder set YSU up at the Western 24, while his 30-yarder set the Penguins up at the WIU 18. His 36-yard return was the longest punt return for YSU since Jake Godec went 66 yards against Clarion in 2002.
Earning scout team performer-of-the-week accolades were freshman wide receiver Aaron Pitts (offense), redshirt freshman linebacker Karl Walker (defense) and sophomore linebacker Joe Nicholson (special teams).
Senior linebacker Mike Andrews received the W.O.W. Derek Pixley Hit of the Game. Andrews had a crunching tackle of Paul Anderson on a kickoff return. Andrews finished with contest with eight total tackles and has a team-high 48 for the year.
The Haines Family Player of the Game as selected by the YSU radio broadcast team was Perry for his efforts on both defense and special teams.

The Penguins, who are now ranked 14th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and 15th in The Sports Network Poll, are 6-1 overall this season and 3-0 in the Gateway for the first time since 2000.
YSU returns to the gridiron on Saturday when it plays host to Missouri State in its annual Homecoming tilt. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
