Football: Jackson, Wright, Perry Pick Up Awards For WIU Contest

Cornerback Codera Jackson (defense),
wide receiver Damian Wright
(offense) and cornerback/punt
returner Jason Perry (special teams)
garnered Hill Barth & King Player of
the Game awards for their
performances against Western
Illinois from the coaching staff.
Jackson was selected as the Hill Barth & King Defensive
Player of the Game for the second
time this season. He was named the
player of the game against
Northeastern. Jackson, Perry and
Aaron Scales played 84 snaps on
defense during the contest. Jackson
helped set up the game-winning
touchdown with his fifth
interception of the season during
the fourth quarter. With YSU
trailing 21-17, Jackson intercepted
a Steve LaFalce pass at the Western
Illinois and returned it to the 31.
Three plays, later Mason scored a
touchdown and the defense held on
the ensuing drive to preserve the
win. He was credited with five solo
tackles by the coaching staff.
Wright was named the Hill Barth & King Offensive Player of
the Game. Wright had four receptions
for 84 yards and a touchdown against
the Leathernecks. In the first
quarter, Wright scored on a 39-yard
pass from Tom Zetts.
Perry, who was credited with six total tackles and a pass breakup,
returned three punts for 72 yards.
He had returns of 36 and 30 yards in
the game. His 36-yarder set YSU up
at the Western 24, while his
30-yarder set the Penguins up at the
WIU 18. His 36-yard return was the
longest punt return for YSU since
Jake Godec went 66 yards against
Clarion in 2002.
Earning scout team performer-of-the-week accolades were freshman
wide receiver Aaron Pitts (offense),
redshirt freshman linebacker Karl
Walker (defense) and sophomore
linebacker Joe Nicholson (special
teams).
Senior linebacker Mike Andrews received the W.O.W. Derek
Pixley Hit of the Game. Andrews had
a crunching tackle of Paul Anderson
on a kickoff return. Andrews
finished with contest with eight
total tackles and has a team-high 48
for the year.
The Haines Family Player of the Game as selected by the YSU
radio broadcast team was Perry for
his efforts on both defense and
special teams.
The Penguins, who are now
ranked 14th in the ESPN/USA Today
Coaches Poll and 15th in The Sports
Network Poll, are 6-1 overall this
season and 3-0 in the Gateway for
the first time since 2000.
YSU returns to the gridiron on Saturday when it plays host to
Missouri State in its annual
Homecoming tilt. Kickoff is set for
4 p.m. |
