Football: Smith, Perry, Terry Earn HBK Player-of-the-Week Accolades

Youngstown Senior wide receiver Kyle Smith, junior cornerback Jason Perry and sophomore linebacker James Terry were named the YSU Hill Barth & King Players of the Game for their performances in the impressive 42-10 victory over Western Kentucky, the coaching staff announced on Tuesday.
Smith was named the HBK Offensive Player of the Game after hauling in six passes for a season-high 111 yards and two touchdowns against the Hilltoppers. Smith had touchdown grabs of 41 and five yards in the contest and the 111 yards were the second most in a game in his career. He has now caught a pass in a school record 30 games, a streak that ranks sixth best in Gateway history. In his career he has 101 receptions for 1,536 yards. He is tied for ninth in school history for career receptions while ranking 10th in yardage.
Perry was on the field 69 plays and earned a technique grade of 91 percent from the coaching staff to earn HBK Defensive Player-of-the-Game honors. He was credited with six tackles, had a forced fumble, a pass breakup and returned an interception 19 yards.
Terry was named the HBK Special Teams Player of the Game for his efforts on kickoff coverages recording four tackles inside the 21-yard line. Terry tackled Dennis Mitchell on the opening kickoff at the 14-yard line, he again tackled Mitchell on the next kickoff at the Hilltopper 14. On YSU's third kickoff of the game, he stopped Mitchell at the WKU 21. On the Penguins' fourth kickoff, he dropped Mitchell at the 20-yard line. Two of the Penguins' other three kickoffs were for touchbacks.
Redshirt freshman Brad Samsa was named the Jim Zdelar Offensive Lineman of the Game. Samsa was impressive in his first career start protecting an injured Tom Zetts for most of the contest. Senior defensive end Brandon Brown was named the Jermaine Hopkins Defensive Lineman of the Week. Brown played a defensive-line high 51 snaps. He was credited four tackles, including two solos. He had one tackle for loss and forced a WKU fumble on the opening drive of the game to set up the Penguins' first touchdown.
Earning scout team honors for their play throughout the week were freshman quarterback Todd Rowan (offense), freshman linebacker Mike Barlak (defense) and sophomore wide receiver Tariq Goode (special teams).
Brown earned the W.O.W./Derek Pixley Hit of the Week when he forced a Chris Jackson fumble on a crunching hit that set the tone for the rest of the game.
Smith was also selected as the Haines Family Player of the Game by the YSU radio broadcast crew.

In the national polls, the Penguins moved up to 15th in the Sports Network Top 25 Poll and 16th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. The Gateway Conference had five teams ranked in this week's Top 25, the most by any league in the county by two.
YSU will practice on Thursday and Friday before gathering on Sunday to watch the NCAA Selection at 1 p.m. in Stambaugh Stadium's DeBartolo Club. The public is invited to attend the event.
