Football: YSU Ranks Fourth in Total Attendance, 10th in Average
Youngstown State football fans showed they remain
some of the most loyal and
supportive in Division I-AA as the
Penguins ranked fourth in total
attendance and 10th in average per
game attendance according to figures
released by the NCAA this week.
On the strength of playing eight
home games -- third-most in the
country -- YSU had 121,269 fans in
attendance for an average of 15,159
per contest.
In total attendance Montana (203,403) was first, Appalchian
State (184,911) was second, Delaware
(152,773) was third while Youngstown
State was fourth.
In average attendance, YSU was just one of 12 schools to
average more than 15,000 fans for
the entire season, including playoff
contests.
For the 10th straight year -- and every year since joining
the league in 1997 -- Youngstown
State led the Gateway Conference in
average and total attendance.
YSU's average attendance of 15,159
marked the highest average since the
2002 while the total fans were the
most since 1999. The 121,269 ranks
third all-time in Stambaugh Stadium
history behind 161,810 established
in 1994 and 150,887 set in 1999.
The Penguins have won 14 of their
last 15 home games since October
2004, including a 7-1 record in
2006. The 28-21 playoff victory over
Illinois State on Dec. 2 marked the
125th victory in Stambaugh Stadium's
25-year history. All-time, YSU is
125-41-1 in the complex.
YSU's first game of the 2007 slate
is at Ohio State on Sept. 1. It is
the first time since 1995 that the
Penguins will play a season opener
on the road. |
