Football: Joe Bishop's Directional Punting Leads to GFC Special Teams
Honor
Youngstown State
punter Joe Bishop had a major hand
in the field-position battle during
the 31-24 victory over Southern
Illinois on Saturday and for his
efforts, he was named the Gateway's
Special Teams Player of the Week.
Bishop placed a punt at the
five-yard line in the first quarter
and YSU eventually took over at the
Salukis' 35-yard line. The drive
resulted in the Guins' first
touchdown of the game and tied the
score at seven.
Two of his kicks in the fourth
quarter made the biggest impact.
After a YSU drive stalled at the SIU
39, he knocked a punt out of bounds
at the Saluki four-yard line with
11:08 remaining. The Penguin defense
held and the offense moved the ball
54 yards for the game-tying score
with 5:01 remaining.
His ensuing kickoff placed the
Salukis at their own 15 and the
defense was able to intercept a Nick
Hill pass at the 30-yard line to set
up the eventual game-winning score.
Bishop had four punts for an average of 35 yards, including a
long of 45 against SIU. The Salukis
were held in check with no punt
return yardage. Last year, SIU had
90 yards on two returns including a
return for a touchdown by first-team
all-league returner Craig Turner.
The Penguins lead the Gateway in net punting at 34.9 yards
per kick.
It marks the second time this season
and the fourth time in his career he
has been named the Gateway Special
Teams Player of the Week.
Western Illinois' Herb Donaldson was named the Gateway's
Offensive Player of the Week while
Illinois State linebacker Cameron
Siskowic was the Defensive Player of
the Week.
The Penguins return to action on Saturday when the play their
final regular-season contest of the
year at Western Kentucky. |
