Football: Heacock Named AFCA Region Four Division I-AA Coach of the Year For Second Straight Time
Waco, Texas -- For the second straight year, Youngstown State Head Football Coach Jon Heacock has been named the American Football Coaches Association Region Four Division I-AA Coach of the Year, the organization announced on Monday.
    Heacock, who earned the
Bruce Craddock Gateway Football Coach of the Year for the second straight year, guided the Penguins to the first outright Gateway title in school history this season.

YSU went 9-2 in the regular season and posted a 6-1 conference mark. The nine wins were the most in the regular season since 2000 and the six conference victories are a school record.

Currently, YSU is 11-2 after posting playoff victories over sixth-ranked James Madison and No. 11 Illinois State. The Penguins play their first semifinal game since 1999 when the visit top-ranked Appalachian State on Saturday.

In his six seasons as the Guins' head coach, Heacock owns a 43-26 record for a winning percentage of .623. His last two campaigns have been his most successful posting a mark of 19-5.

Joining Heacock as Regional Coach-of-the-Year selections are UMass's Don Brown (Region 1), Appalachian State's Jerry Moore (Region 2), UT-Martin's Jason Simpson (Region 3) and Montana's Bobby Hauck (Region 5).
Moore, Heacock, Bloomsburg's Danny Hale (Division II) and Wisconsin-Whitewater's Bob Berezowtiz (Division III) are the only repeat Regional winners for 2005.
Moore of Appalachian State won the AFCA Division I-AA Coach-of-the-Year honor last year.

The AFCA recognizes five regional Coach of the Year winners in each of the Association’s four divisions: I-A, I-AA, Division II (NCAA Division II and NAIA schools) and Division III.
The winners are selected by active members of the Association who vote for coaches in their respective regions and divisions. The AFCA will announce its four National Coach of the Year winners at the 2007 AFCA Convention in Dallas. All head coaches who were eligible for regional honors are eligible for national honors as well.
