Football: Juniors Sweep Top Player Awards In Victory at Illinois State
Youngstown -- Juniors played a big impact
in the Youngstown State football
team's 27-13 victory at previously
third-ranked Illinois State on
Saturday.
Junior quarterback Tom Zetts was
named the Hill Barth & King
Offensive Player of the Game, junior
linebacker James Terry was named the
Hill Barth & King Defensive Player
of the Game and junior cornerback
Tyler Griffin was tabbed the HBK
Special Teams Player of the Game by
the Guins' coaching staff.
Junior tight end Louis Irizarry was
named the Jim Zdelar Offensive
Lineman of the Game while junior
defensive end Greg Jacobs was picked
as the Jermaine Hopkins Defensive
Lineman of the Game.
Zetts, the HBK Offensive Player,
rushed for a career-high 110 yards
on 12 carries, scored a touchdown
and did not get sacked. Zetts
completed nine passes for 93 yards,
but his legs helped the Penguins the
most. Entering the game he had 131
rushes for 92 yards.
Terry, the HBK Defensive Player, was
credited with four tackles,
including a sack for a seven-yard
loss. Griffin, the HBK Special Teams
Player, had two special teams
tackles and two tackles on defense.
Irizarry had his best performance of
the season participating in 68 plays
and earning a season-high grade of
85 percent. He caught a pass for 14
yards and had a grab for a two-point
conversion in the third quarter.
Jacobs had three total tackles,
including two solo stops to earn the
defensive lineman honor. YSU allowed
just 18 yards rushing, the fewest
since a minus-36 yard performance
against Alcorn State in 1994.
Earning scout-team honors for their
performances during the week were
freshman tailback Jordan Edwards
(offense), freshman linebacker Nick
Mernedakis (defense) and freshman
long snapper Kyle Banna (special
teams).
Zetts also picked up the Haines
Family Player of the Game award from
the YSU Broadcast team of Bob
Hannon, Dick Hartzell, Dave Sess and
engineer Mike Orto.
Zetts earned the Wachovia Leadership
Award for helping guide the Penguins
to their first win over a ranked
team on the road since the 1999
playoffs at Montana.
YSU received good news in the
National Polls. The Penguins, who
were 10th following the loss to UNI,
moved up to seventh in the Sports
Network and CSN Coaches Poll.
Youngstown State plays its final
regular-season home game of the year
on Saturday against No. 12 Southern
Illinois. Kickoff is set for 1:05
p.m. at Stambaugh Stadium. |
