Football: Senior Day
Stars Named Award Winners Against
SIU
Youngstown – Senior tailback
Marcus Mason, senior defensive
tackle Jim Phelan and senior safety
Chris Goffer earned Hill Barth &
King Player of the Game awards for
their performances in Saturday’s
31-24 thrilling victory over
Southern Illinois. Senior offensive
tackle Pat Walker and senior
linebacker Marty Hutchinson were
named linemen of the game.
Mason was named the Hill Barth &
King Offensive Player of the Game
for the fifth time this season.
Against the Salukis he rushed for
249 yards on 29 carries and scored
two touchdowns, including the
22-yard game winner. He averaged 8.6
yards per carry in a performance
that ranked as the fifth best in
school history.
Phelan was named the HBK Defensive
Player of the Game for recording
three tackles, including 1.5 for six
yards in losses and a pass breakup.
Goffer was tabbed the HBK Special
Teams Player of the Game. He had
three total tackles in the contest,
including one on a kickoff.
Walker was named the Jim Zdelar
Offensive Lineman of the Game for
the third time this season.
Hutchinson was picked as the
Jermaine Hopkins Defensive Lineman
of the Game. Hutchison had five
total tackles, including three solo
stops and a pass breakup. His
biggest stop came on the final play
of the game when he talked SIU
quarterback Nick Hill at the
two-yard line as time eventually ran
out.
Earning scout team honors for their
performances during the week were
redshirt freshman quarterback Todd
Rowan (offense), redshirt freshman
safety Brandon Strapp (defense) and
redshirt freshman cornerback Lenny
Wicks (special teams).
Senior tight end Max King was the
recipient of the Derek Pixley/Wash
On Wheels Hit of the Week. Mason was
tabbed the Haines Family Player of
the Game by the YSU broadcast crew
and junior wide receiver Rory Berry
received the Wachovia Leadership
Award.
In the national polls, the Penguins
moved up one spot from sixth to
fifth in both the Sports Network and
CSN Coaches Poll.
YSU returns to action on Saturday
when it travels to Western Kentucky.
Kickoff at L.T. Smith Stadium is set
for 5 p.m. Eastern time. |
