Football: Seniors
Take Awards for Performances at
Western Kentucky
Senior tailback Monquantae Gibson,
senior linebacker Marty Hutchinson
and senior tailback Justin Reams
earned Hill Barth & King Player of
the Game accolades for their
performances in the 19-3 win over
Western Kentucky.
Joining those three seniors in
earning honors were senior center
Ryan Jewell (offensive lineman) and
senior linebacker Jeff Koval
(defensive lineman).
Gibson, the HBK Offensive Player of
the Game, rushed for 236 yards on an
amazing 43 carries in making the
return to his homestate. He scored
on two one-yard runs - one in the
first and one in the fourth.
Entering the game, Gibson had 43
carries for the entire year.
Hutchinson posted 11 tackles,
including eight solo stops to be the
HBK Defensive Player of the Game. He
has had five double-figure tackle
games, but his 11-stop performance
against WKU was the most since
breaking his hand prior to the
Western Illinois game.
Reams was named the HBK Special
Teams Player of the game. He had a
tackle on the opening kickoff as
well as rushing attempt during the
game.
Jewell earned the Jim Zdelar
Offensive Lineman of the Game nod
for the first time this season
against WKU. He finished with his
second-highest grade of the season.
Koval was tabbed the Jermaine
Hopkins Defensive Lineman of the
Game. He was credited with a
four-yard sack during the fourth
quarter.
Earning scout-team honors for their
performances during the week were
sophomore wide receiver Nick
Canterino (offense), sophomore
cornerback Tom Krupko (defense) and
sophomore cornerback Tony Kavouras
(special teams).
Gibson was also named the Haines
Family Player of the Game by the YSU
Radio Broadcast crew.
Earning the Wachovia Leadership
Award for his efforts during the
week and the season was offensive
lineman Erik Claxon.
In both major national polls, the
Penguins moved up to fifth. YSU was
sixth entering the game at WKU.
Saturday is the final day of the
regular season for Division I-AA
teams. The NCAA selection show is
set for Sunday at 1 p.m. on NCAANews. |
